FOUND in December of 2013: A collection of 71 year old NAGASAKI (UNAUTHORIZED) aerial photographs of the Atomic Bomb aftermath in Nagasaki, discovered in my deceased Marine Sergeant father’s file cabinet, original photographic collection discovered in mid-December 2013, some 28 years AFTER my dad passed away from what I now realize was the residual after-effects of radiation exposure……

What is being offered here is a 24″ x 30″ authorized enlargement, (unframed) of what I believe to be the most AMAZING fly-over view of the geographical area of Nagasaki that was most impacted by the Atomic Bomb blast of August 9th, 1945…

Owning this now authorized 24″ x 30″, collectible enlargement will enhance every WWII collection… NOTE: When I took a picture of he actual attached enlargement, for this posting, I was not able to eliminate some of the room background reflection that can be seen in the framed picture… but, you can see some INCREDIBLE detail in the actual 24″ x 30″ enlargement.

The original photographs are privately owned and are NOT for sale at any price…

The x-Ray image above is an actual x-Ray of my right hand… It is my actual birth-hand, and it is unique enough to have been issued an actual COPYRIGHT for the image…

Ever since I can remember, I wondered WHY I was born with a birth defect… A very unusual birth defect… Unusual enough to have been issued a Copyright on my birth defect right hand… Issued [Copyright number VAu 1-104-946…]

The photographic collection copyrights were filed and have been issued in late 2014… [Copyright number VAu 1-193-578]

Long story short… My Dad was a Marine during WWII… Dad was station on Saipan, Okinawa and lastly on Tinian Island through to November 1945… Tinian Island is where the Bombers took off from to bomb Hiroshima and Nagasaki…

While he was at Tinian Island, just 4 DAYS after Japan surrendered on August 15th, 1945, on August 19, 1945 my dad and a few Marine pilot buddies of his, flew to Nagasaki to check things out…

While flying over and landing at the airfield of Omura, Nagasaki, my dad took a series of (then UNAUTHORIZED) pictures, amazing, fly-over, panoramic pictures of the devastation.

I believe, after all my research, that these pictures are the FIRST pictures ever taken just after the detonation of the Atomic Bomb.

The photographs he took, were taken just TEN DAYS after the Atomic Bomb detonated over Nagasaki, and just FOUR DAYS after Japan officially surrendered, are beyond AMAZING

My dad, that I remembered, NEVER talked about the ‘war’ or anything he did during The War… and being a kid, I never knew or thought to ask about what he did and saw during his military tour, even though he kept his dress uniform in his closet for years… BUT, when I acquired his military records a few years ago… Well, the detailed story I was able to finally put together, over the past 3 years, goes like this:

  1. Dad was stationed on Okinawa, then on Saipan and on to Tinian Island, as I have acquired copies of all of his military records that are still available.
  2. Dad died in late June of 1987, at age 61+, (almost 9+ years younger than I am today), with what I now know as residual effects of radiation exposure/poisoning. He had been very ill, with several conditions, for over the last 10 years of his life…
  3. I was conceived just 7 weeks after my dad was discharged from the Marine Corps, he was discharged in March of 1946, I was then conceived and I was subsequently born with a birth defect, in February of 1947… I believe my DNA was affected by my dad’s exposure to the radiation. The above x-Ray is an actual x-Ray image of my right hand… (Ask me for my 67 page detailed web site story link)
  4. I’d always wondered about WHAT happened to have caused my right hands’ very unique birth defect… BUT, it really did not become ‘real clear’ for me until 6 months after my dad passed away. He had many, many health issues that are now known to be radiation exposure related…
  5. My brother called me and asked me if I ever heard from those men who visited with dad in the VA hospital, who were talking with him about where he was during his ‘tour’… My brother told me he said Dad had been in “Nagasaki”… … He said these men called themselves “Atomic Veterans”… My brain exploded and everything started to fall into place… “…My father had atomic-bomb radiation exposure to affect his DNA… “
  6. Looking, as best as I was able, searching in my dad’s history, the real ‘smoking gun’ was discovered weeks after my step-mother passed away in December of 2013. My brother and step-sister were going through the ‘time capsule’ condo where they lived together and my brother found my dad’s old file cabinet, that hadn’t moved out of the Florida condo in over 40 years… In the file cabinet my brother found a collection of pictures that my dad took, while flying over, around and on the ground at Nagasaki.
  7. Then the chain of events of that puzzle I pieced together goes like this:

Dad was there in Nagasaki, as evidenced by his now 70+ year old just discovered photographs, just days after Japan surrendered…

According to his military records, he was also noted for being in combat on Okinawa…

He personally took and then hand dated the collection of Nagasaki pictures FOUR days after Japan surrendered, he hand dated the pictures “August 19, 1945″…

It appears that Dad had to seek medical treatment for radiation exposure, and subsequently, had to say how he got exposed. I suspect he was going to have been dishonorably discharged, but since he (1) received a commendation for being in combat on Okinawa and (2) ‘they’ just won the war, they let his leaving the base and going to an unauthorized military location infraction slide… I suspect that everyone was just too happy the war was finally over, and ‘WE WON…”… that what dad did, by going to Nagasaki, was unimportant any longer…!!!!

MacArthur accepted Japans surrender on September 2, 1945 and immediately implemented Martial LawMaking it very ILLEGAL for any civilian or military personal to take “UNAUTHORIZED and pre-screened, by his ‘media’ PR department, pictures or news reels… It was not officially legal to take or release confiscated pictures until 1966… Some TWENTY YEARS after the war was over… because the US was afraid of adverse public reaction to the human devastation in the pictures.

With Martial Law in effect, I believe there was no way Dad was going to mention that he had taken and had possession of the pictures he took, flying around, over Nagasaki… I believe that knowledge of the existence of his picture collection would have jeopardized his ‘honorable discharge’ and his future Veterans Benefits. He never spoke a word to anyone about the pictures he took, not even to family.

Dad’s pictures were just discovered in December of 2013… When his wife, (my step-mother), had passed away, passing away some 26-27 years after he passed away… The photographs were hidden in his old file cabinet, tucked away in the back of their Florida beach condominium closet.

I have possession of these photographs… (Well, the bank safety deposit box really has them…)

  1. I then bought an expensive ‘high-resolution DPI’ scanner to pull the detail out of the photos, enough detail to be able to enlarge the photographs to 24″ x 30″ and even larger; the picture enlargement detail is AMAZING…!! The posted pictures herein and on the website intentionally do not clearly show all of the detail that these pictures reveal…
  2. I have only given 8″ x 10″ enlargement photographs away to my 3 living brothers and 24″ x 30″ enlargements to 3 good friends… No other reproduced enlarged prints have been given out or sold to anyone, as of this date.
  3. I had an on-line Appraiser give me an opinion as to their value; in essence, the ORIGINAL photographs were appraised as “PRICELESS”… I was also told, in writing by the appraiser, that IF I was to give out certified enlargement copies of these pictures, they could command up to $800 each… I was also told by a second appraiser that these original pictures “WERE INDEED PRICELESS” and needed to be on display in the Smithsonian or an important war memorial museum somewhere.

Ask me for the link to my website for the complete background story… the website is full 67 pages of original content…

The picture images, shown on the website, were ‘pixeled-down’ so as to clearly not show all of the detail available in these photographs…

What you will see and read on my website took me over 60 years to experience and subsequently put together in this written format….

The Church steeple is the remains of the Nakamachi Church. The set of three rectangular buildings just below the Nakamachi Church remains is the remains of the Shinkozen Primary School with the Nagasaki City Hall just a bit off to the right of the school.
